Heartwood is a golden to dark reddish brown. Color tends to darken with age. Besides the common ribbon pattern seen on quartersawn boards, sapele is also known for a wide variety of other figured grain patterns, such as: pommele, quilted, mottled, wavy, beeswing, and fiddleback.

Sapele is used in all sorts of premium quality products.

From furniture to boatbuilding, panelling, flooring, veneer, doors- and windows components, musical instruments, countertops, beams, and speciality applications.

Sapele is from the same botanical family as both American and African Mahogany.
Because of this sapele is a very close match both visually as in the wood processing, and the application and working characteristics.
